Industry: Self-storage is rental real estate: As with other rental real estate operators, self-storage involves making space available for tenants to use. There are over 1,200 self-storage facilities in TN with more than 560,000,000 square feet.
Goal: The goal of the Tennessee Self Storage Association (TNSSA) is to assist association members by providing accurate information on issues such as lien laws, property taxes, and other concerns the self-storage industry faces. It also provides educational opportunities and access to industry publications.
Board: The Board of Directors volunteer their time and serve two-year terms. Officers are elected annually and donate their time and effort to serve the association.
Committees: There are five Leadership Committees that are chaired by our active Board of Directors: Communications/Website, Events & Education, Legislative, Membership, and Emergency Preparedness.
Education: TNSSA hosts quarterly membership meetings rotated among Nashville, Knoxville, Memphis, and Chattanooga. Officers provide reports and committee updates. At each meeting an educational speaker provides information pertinent to our industry. Also, since 2009 TNSSA has hosted an Annual Legal Seminar. Many webinars have also been offered.
History: On August 28, 2007, a group of self-storage industry owners, operators, and industry vendors assembled in Nashville, Tennessee. This group’s consensus was 1) that a need existed for a Tennessee association to promote the self storage industry and to provide accurate information to current business owners and those interested in starting a self-storage business and 2) the industry needed leadership and a voice to speak to the public and to government officials about pending legislation affecting the industry. Out of this meeting, TNSSA was formed as a nonprofit organization. Before the end of 2007, with only 35 members, we officially affiliated with the national Self Storage Association (SSA).

The Self Storage Association (SSA), since 1975, has been the official not-for-profit (IRS Code section 501-c-6) national trade association representing the self-storage industry and is the registered lobbying organization before the United States Congress and federal agencies. Each month, SSA publishes the "official voice of the self storage industry," the SSA Globe magazine, which is the industry’s largest paid-circulation magazine, with a monthly circulation of approximately 15,000 and a national annual readership in excess of 500,000.
The SSA represents the huge U.S. self storage industry that is comprised of some 50,000 facilities. The SSA estimates that in 2009 the industry had total sales of more than $22 billion (USD). The average U.S. self storage facility has approximately 46,200 square feet of rentable space and pays an average of between $30,000 and $40,000 per year in local property taxes. The entire industry pays more than $3.0 billion per year in local property taxes nationwide.
